College Track and Field Recruiting - Sophomore Year

In less than a year, college coaches will be allowed to start contacting you. On September 15 following your sophomore year, your recruiting process will begin. As a result, it is imperative that you devise a plan of action now.

Below are three suggestions for you to consider during your sophomore year of high school to optimize your college recruitment experience:

DETERMINE THE BEST FIT FOR YOU

Create an expansive list of schools/programs that meet your specific needs and desires. Among factors to consider are affiliation level (NCAA I, II, III, NAIA, and JUCO), competitiveness of the program, cost of attendance, quality of education, geographical location, intended academic major, enrollment size, public vs private, and other factors that matter to YOU. Do not be mesmerized by the name of a school. See beyond the prowess of their football and basketball programs or their academic reputation. Make sure the schools you choose meets your needs for reasons beyond it simply being cool to tell the world you will be running or studying at a particular school. There is much more to college track and field than simply Division I. Create a list of schools that you would be happy at without track and field - just in case your athletic career does not go as planned.

TAKE CHARGE

Do not be passive. Start reaching out to college coaches now from the schools on your list even if they cannot contact you back (NCAA III schools are able to). In my personal dealings with high school student-athletes, I often heard prospects state that the schools on their list were comprised solely of programs that contacted them. If a program you’re interested in does not reach out to you, reach out to them! You will be surprised at how effective personally reaching out will enhance your recruiting experience. Start taken unofficial visits after August 01 prior to the start of your Junior year. Meet the coach, take a campus tour, and eat lunch at a local restaurant. Start to get an idea of what it is you want in a college.

COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY

Over the span of my thirty-year coaching career, I learned that communication is the most important element to reaching your goals. It is imperative that you learn to communicate openly and effectively with your parents, high school coach, and college coaches. Because it is only your sophomore year NCAA I college coaches are not allowed to respond to your emails and other forms of communication, but now is still a good time to start reaching out. Fill out their online questionnaire. Send an email expressing your interest in their program and give them a brief overview of who you are as an athlete and student.

Your sophomore year is a great time to begin readying yourself for the process that is about to begin. You should view this time as your pre-season training - although there will be no meets during this time the work and preparation that you do now will be critical to future success.

Track and Field Recruiting

Want to compete for the Stanford Cardinal Track and Field Program? Get ready to work hard! Not only will you have to have close to a 4.0 GPA and test scores in the 30 ACT / 1400 SAT range, you are also going to need off the chart performance marks as well, regardless of your event. There is no easy way onto this team.

The Stanford coaching staff purposefully does not post recruiting standards for their program. According to their coaches there are too many factors to consider.

I went through their roster to identify what marks their current athletes achieved in High School. The performances listed below will give you an idea of just how competitive you will need to be in each event:

Harvard Track and Field Recruiting Class - 2022

Ivy League Track and Field Recruiting

The William W. "Bill" McCurdy Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, Jason Saretsky, has announced 19 incoming first-years in the Class of 2026.

"I'm so excited to welcome the Class of 2026 to Cambridge," Saretsky said. "Our coaching staff and current student-athletes once again did a fantastic job attracting some of the best and brightest in the world to Harvard. I'm looking forward to their arrival on campus and the big things we will achieve together."

Harvard heads into 2022-23 after a strong return to cross country and track and field competition last year.

Both Harvard cross country men and women clinched berths to the NCAA Cross Country Championships last fall, finishing 12th and 25th, respectively, which were both second-best in Harvard history. Led by junior Isabell Sagar (3rd) and sophomore Maia Ramden (5th), the Harvard women's team won the 2021 Ivy League Heptagonal Championships with five runners finishing in the top 12 to help Harvard earn its first women's title since 2016. On the men's side senior Matthew Pereira finished first overall to earn the individual Heps crown, helping the men's team finish second overall. Associate head coach Alex Gibby earned USTFCCCA Men's and Women's Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors, and was Ivy League Coach of the Year on the women's side as well.

During the indoor track and field season, the women's team won its first Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championship since 2017, and the men's team placed second, its second straight runner up finish at Indoor Heps. Saretsky was named Ivy League Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year, as 22 Harvard track & field athletes achieved All-Ivy status by finishing among the top two in their respective events at Heps. The indoor season also saw national recognition as Saretsky was voted the Northeast Women's Head Coach of the Year and associate head coach Marc Mangiacotti was voted the Northeast Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.

In the outdoor season, both the Harvard men's and women's track and field programs finished in second place at the 2022 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships. Harvard earned 10 individual Heps titles with an even split – five individual men's champions and five individual women's champions. Senior discus thrower Sam Welsh was named Most Outstanding Men's Field Performer of the Meet. The Harvard men's team recorded its highest finish at the Ivy outdoor championships since 1983. Harvard had seven entries at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with six male entries, the most since 1964. Mangiacotti was again voted the Northeast Men's Assistant Coach of the Year for the outdoor accolades of men's sprints and horizontal jumps.

The incoming Crimson come from all over the world, spanning seven states and eight countries.

Bucknell track & field and cross country head coach Kevin Donner announced the addition of 38 student-athletes to the 2022-23 rosters. The Bison are welcoming an even 19 new members to both the women's squad and the men's squad.

The Bison captured a gold medal in the indoor 60m dash, and several athletes and relay teams shined at the ECAC championships.

"Overall, I would say that it was a very solid year for recruiting. We were able to strengthen some of our weaker areas and provide some more depth in some of our stronger areas," said Donner. "Some of these women will help us right away, and some others will need some time to develop. I do not rank a recruiting year until the incoming class become juniors, but I am optimistic that many of these women will help us be successful. The school has a campus in each city, though the Minneapolis site is considered the main campus of the University of Minnesota. Freshmen do not have to live on campus, but the more than 80 percent who choose to can opt to live in traditional residence halls or one of more than two dozen Living Learning communities, such as the Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives House and La Casa De Español. Also on campus are more than 600 student organizations, including more than 30 fraternities and sororities. The Minnesota Golden Gophers compete in the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference, and all athletic events are held in the Minneapolis campus's Stadium Village neighborhood. Goldy Gopher, the school mascot, energizes thousands of student fans as they chant "Ski-U-Mah," a rally cry that means "Victory UM." Under the Four-Year Graduation Plan, the university ensures that all necessary classes will be available for students to complete their degrees on time.
