The Recruiting Trickle-Down Effect | Why College Track Recruiting Has Become Harder

The Recruiting Trickle-Down Effect

Why college track & field recruiting has become more difficult for almost everyone — and why families must cast a wider net than ever before.

College track & field recruiting has changed dramatically over the last several years, and many families are discovering that the rules they thought existed no longer fully apply. Roster limits, the transfer portal, and shifting recruiting priorities have created ripple effects across nearly every level of college track and field. Many families assume these changes only affect Power 4 programs. They do not. What is happening now is what I call:

The Recruiting Trickle-Down Effect

What Changed?

Major Division I programs have become increasingly selective. As roster spots have tightened, athletes who previously may have walked on — or competed for lower scholarship opportunities — at schools like Stanford, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Michigan, Texas, UCLA, or USC are beginning to widen their search.

Many athletes are now increasingly considering:

  • Boston University
  • William & Mary
  • Ivy League schools
  • Georgetown
  • Other highly selective Division I programs

Not because these schools suddenly became easier. But because they still provide:

  • Elite academics
  • Division I competition
  • Strong alumni networks
  • Career opportunities
  • Long-term value beyond athletics

The Effect Doesn't Stop There

The movement continues downward. Athletes who historically may have fit comfortably within Ivy League recruiting are now broadening their search toward highly selective Division III institutions.

Schools increasingly benefiting include:

  • Johns Hopkins
  • Emory
  • Washington University in St. Louis
  • Tufts
  • Carnegie Mellon
  • NYU
  • University of Chicago
"In today's recruiting landscape, casting a wider net is not lowering expectations — it is increasing opportunities."

What Families Should Do

Families do not need to panic. But they do need to become more strategic. The strongest recruiting plans today often include:

  • Reach schools
  • Realistic target schools
  • Likely opportunities
  • Academic fit
  • Financial fit
  • Athletic fit

One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is becoming emotionally attached to only a handful of schools. The athletes creating the strongest opportunities today are often not simply the most talented. They are the athletes and families that understand the landscape earlier and adapt faster.

Coach Wood Insight: I spent 20 years as Head Coach at Columbia University and have worked with hundreds of families navigating college recruiting. The landscape will continue evolving, but one thing remains true: Families that understand the process earlier create more options later.
