University of Richmond Track & Field Recruiting Standards

Richmond Recruiting Overview
Understanding Richmond Track & Field Recruiting
The University of Richmond combines highly selective academics, NCAA Division I competition, and a distinctive track and field program structure.
Richmond’s women compete across a traditional range of track and field events. The men’s program is structured primarily around cross country and distance running, with roster opportunities generally focused on athletes competing from the 800m through the 10K.
The standards below are presented as competitive recruiting ranges. The faster end reflects Richmond’s target-recruit level, while the broader end reflects the published team standard for possible roster consideration.
Important Program Distinction
Richmond Men’s Recruiting Is Distance Focused
Richmond does not operate a traditional full-event men’s track and field program. The men compete in NCAA Division I cross country and also race during the spring in selected track, road, trail, mountain, and championship events.
At this time, men’s roster opportunities are primarily intended for athletes in the 800m through 10K event range.
Male sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers should generally focus their recruiting efforts on universities that actively support and recruit those event groups.
Women’s Recruiting Standards
Richmond Women’s Track & Field Recruiting Ranges
These ranges combine Richmond’s published target-recruit marks and broader team standards. Running events are listed from faster to slower. Field events are listed from the lower team standard to the stronger target-recruit mark.

Men’s Distance Recruiting Standards
Richmond Men’s Cross Country and Distance Recruiting Ranges
Richmond identifies both target-recruit marks and broader team standards for men. Athletes at the faster end may receive stronger consideration for roster positions, official visits, and recruiting events, while the broader end may remain viable depending on roster availability.
| Event | Competitive Recruiting Range |
|---|---|
| 800m | 1:54 – 1:57 |
| 1600m | 4:20 – 4:24 |
| 3200m | 9:20 – 9:28 |
*Richmond’s men’s program may also evaluate athletes through cross country performances, longer-distance track marks, championship results, progression, and projected development.
Beyond the Standards
What Richmond Coaches Are Really Evaluating
Current Performance
Coaches compare marks with current roster depth, graduating athletes, incoming recruits, and Atlantic 10 competitive levels.
Championship Experience
State-meet success, national qualification, and strong performances in meaningful races can strengthen an athlete’s profile.
Progression and Upside
Coaches value athletes who are improving consistently and whose training history suggests further development.
Academic Fit
Richmond is academically selective. Athletic interest must be paired with a strong and credible admissions profile.
Women’s Program Perspective
A Versatile and Competitive Women’s Program
Richmond’s women recruit across sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance, cross country, and selected field events.
Recent recruiting patterns suggest particular depth in the middle-distance and distance groups, although the program also values versatile sprinters and athletes capable of contributing across multiple events.
A strong recruiting candidate often brings more than a single performance mark. Competitive experience, event versatility, academic strength, and evidence of continued progression can all influence coach interest.
Men’s Program Perspective
Building an Elite Cross Country-Only Model
Richmond’s stated vision is to become one of the nation’s leading cross country-only men’s programs while producing exceptional track performances among its distance athletes.
Because roster opportunities are concentrated in a narrow range of events, the men’s recruiting process can be particularly selective.
Prospective recruits should demonstrate distance-running ability, championship competitiveness, academic strength, and the potential to contribute in the Atlantic 10 and beyond.
